Master the Art of Headboard Building & Upholstery

Premium Full-Day Professional Skills Workshop

Two Students. Two Instructors. Real Trade Skills.

9 AM – 5 PM | $1,200 per person | All Tools & Materials Included

This is not your average DIY workshop!

At Bespoke Original Skills Studio, we're introducing an intensive, hands-on training experience that takes you beyond basic furniture projects and into professional headboard construction and upholstery.

Learn how to plan, build and professionally upholster a custom headboard from the ground up, using the techniques, tools and materials found in the upholstery trade.

Whether you're interested in furniture flipping, creating custom pieces for clients, expanding your woodworking or sewing skills, or exploring a career in upholstery, this workshop will give you practical knowledge you can build upon.

With only two students and two instructors, you'll receive personalized guidance throughout the process, with the opportunity to learn by doing rather than simply watching.

What You'll Learn
1. Design, Planning & Measurements

Every professional project begins with a solid plan.

  • Understanding headboard dimensions, proportions and construction requirements.
  • Planning a design that is both attractive and structurally sound.
  • Calculating wood, foam, fabric and other material requirements.
  • Understanding how different designs affect construction and upholstery.
  • Planning cuts and assembly to minimize waste.

2. Wood Frame Construction

Learn how to create a proper foundation for an upholstered headboard.

  • Selecting suitable wood and frame materials.
  • Measuring, marking and cutting wood accurately.
  • Assembling a strong, stable frame.
  • Understanding structural support and attachment methods.
  • Preparing the frame for foam and upholstery.

3. Foam, Padding & Preparation

Discover what goes underneath the fabric and why it matters.

  • Understanding upholstery foam types, densities and firmness.
  • Choosing the appropriate foam for your design.
  • Measuring and cutting foam accurately.
  • Applying padding and creating smooth, professional edges.
  • Preparing surfaces for upholstery.

4. Fabric Patterning & Cutting

Professional upholstery requires careful planning and accurate fabric handling.

  • Measuring fabric requirements.
  • Understanding fabric direction, grain and pattern placement.
  • Creating patterns and planning fabric layouts.
  • Allowing for seams, edges and finishing.
  • Cutting fabric accurately while minimizing waste.

5. Professional Upholstery & Finishing

Bring your headboard together using proper upholstery techniques.

  • Positioning, stretching and securing upholstery fabric.
  • Understanding tension and professional stapling methods.
  • Working with corners, edges and shaped areas.
  • Achieving clean, consistent finishes.
  • Finishing the back of the headboard.
  • Identifying and avoiding common upholstery mistakes.

6. Decorative & Advanced Techniques

For students with stronger existing skills, additional design techniques may be explored, depending on project complexity and available time.

  • Decorative nailhead studs.
  • Channel-back upholstery.
  • Upholstered panels.
  • More complex shapes and fabric detailing.
  • Custom finishing techniques.

The focus is on learning correct methods and quality craftsmanship, not rushing through a project.

Who Is This Workshop For?

This is an intermediate-level workshop designed for people who already have some practical experience.

You do not need to be a professional upholsterer, but you should have basic woodworking, sewing or upholstery skills and be comfortable using common tools.

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Furniture Flippers: Learn techniques for creating and restoring headboards for resale.
  • Woodworkers: Expand your skills into padding, fabric application and professional upholstery.
  • Sewists: Apply your fabric knowledge to furniture construction and upholstery.
  • DIY Enthusiasts: Move beyond beginner projects and learn professional methods.
  • Creative Entrepreneurs: Explore the possibility of making and selling custom upholstered headboards.
  • Aspiring Tradespeople: Develop foundational skills for further upholstery training or potential employment.

If you're completely new to tools, woodworking and upholstery, we recommend starting with one of our beginner workshops before registering.

A Premium Learning Experience

Two students. Two instructors. A 1:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

We've deliberately designed this workshop for a maximum of two participants because proper trade training requires individual attention.

You'll work directly with professional tools and equipment while receiving guidance, corrections and practical instruction throughout the day.

Our goal is to teach you not just how to build and upholster a headboard, but why particular materials, construction methods and techniques are used.

This is an opportunity to learn in a working upholstery studio, with instruction tailored to your existing skill level.

Everything You Need Is Included

Your $1,200 workshop fee includes:

  • Full-day, hands-on professional instruction.
  • Two experienced instructors on-site.
  • All wood and frame-building materials for the workshop project.
  • Upholstery foam and padding.
  • Upholstery fabric and finishing supplies.
  • Access to professional woodworking and upholstery tools.
  • Stapling equipment, adhesives and other necessary supplies.
  • Individual guidance through design, construction, patterning and upholstery.

There are no additional tool or material purchases required for the standard workshop project.

All you need to bring is your enthusiasm, your existing basic skills and a willingness to learn!

Workshop Schedule

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Design, Planning & Construction

We'll begin with headboard design, measurements and material planning, followed by wood cutting, frame assembly and preparation for upholstery.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | Lunch Break

A one-hour lunch break is provided. Lunch is on your own, and participants are responsible for bringing or purchasing their meals.

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Foam, Fabric & Upholstery

The afternoon focuses on foam cutting and application, fabric patterning, layout, cutting, professional upholstery techniques and finishing details.

The schedule may be adjusted to accommodate project complexity and individual learning needs.

Why Learn Headboard Building & Upholstery?

Professional upholstery is a specialized trade, and experienced craftspeople are becoming harder to find.

Learning to build and upholster headboards can open the door to several opportunities, from furniture restoration and resale to custom manufacturing and further trade training.

Unlike mass-produced furniture assembly, custom upholstery requires hands-on skills, judgment, craftsmanship and an understanding of materials.

These are practical, AI-resistant skills that remain valuable in a changing job market.

At Bespoke Original Skills Studio, we're passionate about keeping traditional craftsmanship alive while helping people develop skills that may lead to new income opportunities or careers.

This workshop won't make you a master upholsterer in one day. It will, however, introduce you to professional construction and upholstery methods that you can continue developing through practice and further training.
