About this Event

ABOUT THE CUISINE

Indian cuisine is extremely diverse, shaped by centuries of regional traditions, religion and trade. From the spice-rich curries of the north to the coconut-infused dishes of the south, India’s food reflects a deep connection to heritage, family, and fresh ingredients. Jiwan’s dishes highlight the warmth and colour of Indian home cooking, showcasing balanced spices, comforting recipes, and the joyful spirit of sharing food with others.

ABOUT THE CHEF

“I am Jiwan, which means life. I have lived most of my life in Punjab, India. It is a farmland state in the north of India and the name comes from five rivers which flowed through the region at one time.

My journey is a bit unusual as it started from need, rather than passion. I grew up in a big family and I learned by watching and trying. When my family was away, I made my first dish, similar to tacos, which was well liked by my family after their return.

I believe cooking is a very important skill, not a talent. Everyone can develop it, given some time and effort! Finding a reason helps a lot and mine is making others happy and smile with my food. There are so many dishes from across India that make me happy - that is why my class focuses on a wider area of India than Punjab.

The time I have spent with Migrateful has been wonderful and fun. I have learnt so much about food and the world during my training! I hope this class teaches you something new which you can take home and spread that happiness.”

THE CLASS FORMAT

Our cookery classes are family-style — meaning everyone works together to prepare the dishes as a team.

While you’ll be asked to choose one dish to focus on, you’ll have the opportunity to move around the kitchen, help with other dishes, and learn from each recipe. It’s a fun, social, and collaborative way to cook! At the end of the class, you’ll sit down with the chef, class facilitator and volunteers to enjoy the delicious meal you’ve created together.
