About this Event

‘In This House’ Creative Writing Workshop, 5-6pm

Center your family and reflect on your own ‘homeplace’ at P4L’s ‘In This House’ creative writing workshop! Hosted by P4L Homeplace exhibition featured poets, Goddess Indigo and Aiyana Da’Briel, this workshop uses their respective, Homeplace and Love Is In This House poems as inspiration for attendees to be guided through writing their own poems, short stories, or songs on themes about their own family. Attendees will also have an opportunity to share their pieces during the workshop or at P4L HOMEPLACE Presents Tha Living Room!

NOTE: To prepare for the workshop, please plan to bring a physical photograph or other piece of memorabilia (i.e. funeral program, handkerchief, place mat, stone, perfume bottle, etc.) that you feel is important in how it is connected to your family or home life. Please also feel free to bring your favorite journal or notepad. All other workshop materials will be provided.

P4L HOMEPLACE Presents Tha Living Room, 6:30p-8:30p

Arts, culture and creative expression are deep within the DNA of Black folks and families! In the Motherland, we had drum circles, call-and-response choral singing, fable storytelling by elders, jubilant dancing, and more! We used our artistic expression and powerful words to give us strength and hope when navigating the journey to the United States and the oppression we endured here and continue to overcome. In many Black homes, the ‘living room’ (or den) is the destination for creativity and fun – pajama jams, Soul Train lines, sing-alongs, and Spades showdowns!

Join P4L for a celebration of the spoken, rhymed and sung word at P4L HOMEPLACE Presents “Tha Living Room”, featuring artists selected for our 10-Year exhibition and members of our P4L Village and beyond! Bring your finger snaps, “mmmhmmm” head nods, and good vibes as we celebrate how verses, verbs, and vocals sustain Black families to love and resist!

Light refreshments will be served.
