The Freud Museum London is delighted to host this evening event to mark the publication of Michaela Chamberlain's latest book On Resisting Women. Michaela Chamberlain will be joined by Juliet Rosenfeld to discuss her book and talk through its themes, discussing how individuals become misogynists and how unacknowledged misogyny infiltrates everyday life.
Michaela and Juliet's discussion will blend psychoanalytic theory with personal, clinical, and cultural insights on misogyny to help us move beyond analysis to action, calling for awareness and change.

About the book
Building on her first book, Misogyny in Psychoanalysis, and drawing on her experiences as a psychotherapist, mother, and researcher, Michaela Chamberlain uses psychoanalytic theory to examine what causes misogyny and how misogyny is internalised, enacted, and justified. Revisiting Freud’s case of Dora and Winnicott’s concept of the “good enough mother”, she explores how these foundational psychoanalytic ideas continue to echo in contemporary expectations placed on women– particularly around sexuality, care, and emotional labour. These essays bridge past and present to ask what has really changed and include a much-needed update to Winnicott’s list of reasons why a mother hates her baby.
From online discussion forums to classical literature, from consulting room dynamics to cultural narratives, Chamberlain investigates how misogyny hides in plain sight, often disguised as common sense, tradition, or even progressive thinking. Her work questions who benefits from patriarchy, who is harmed, and how all of us – regardless of gender – are shaped by its assumptions.

Speakers:
Michaela Chamberlain trained at the Bowlby Centre and studied in the Psychoanalysis Unit at UCL. Shortly after qualifying at the Bowlby Centre, she started teaching Freud and Attachment Theory and became Chair of the Bowlby Centre. She worked as an honorary psychotherapist in two NHS Trusts for several years. She has presented clinical papers at public forums, lectures internationally and has been published in the British Journal of Psychotherapy, Attachment: New Directions in Psychotherapy and Relational Psychoanalysis, Sitegeist A Journal of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy, New Associations and The New Psychotherapist Magazine. Her book, Misogyny in Psychoanalysis, was released in June 2022, it explores the historical and current context of misogyny in psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice and her new book, On Resisting Women was released in 2026.
She is in private practice in London as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and is a supervisor and training therapist.
Juliet Rosenfeld is a psychoanalyst, psychotherapist, and writer. She is a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, Contemporary Site for Psychoanalysis and accredited by the BACP. She previously served as an elected Trustee of the UKCP Board (2019–2022) and is currently Clinical Trustee at the Freud Museum.
She is the author of The State of Disbelief (2020) and Affairs: True Stories of Love, Lies, Hope and Desire (2025), and writes regularly on mental health and psychological aspects of life for newspapers and publications. Her doctoral work at UCL in the Psychoanalysis Unit is focused on the changing landscape of women's relationships and what perspectives psychoanalysis can bring as childbirth, lifelong monogamy and marriage decline and women outperform men in educational terms.
Juliet trained at the Institute of Psychoanalysis, following earlier studies at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and Regent’s University in Integrative Psychotherapy. She also held honorary roles at the Camden Psychotherapy Unit and Tavistock Couples Department.
Before retraining, Juliet studied languages at Oxford and worked for 14 years in advertising, ending up in government communications at the Cabinet Office. She now sees individuals and couples in private practice at the Queen Anne Street Practice. Juliet is particularly interested in both statutory regulation and widening access of both psychotherapy and also psychoanalytic ideas to broader and non clinical audiences.
