IMPRO Amsterdam is one of the world's largest improvised theatre festivals. This year for our 30th anniversary we've got 30 shows from top international performers that demonstrate that impro (also called improv) isn't just funny - it can be so much more.
IMPRO Amsterdam Night 3: IMPRO is... Dramatic
On our opening night we're featuring three very different performances that break the myth that improv is only comedic. Expect great acting deep conflict big feelings and everything else that you can expect from dramatic theatre plus the adrenaline rush of knowing that it's all created live and in the moment.
One ticket (€25 or €250 with Stadspas) gets you access to the two mainstage shows and for €3 extra you can come to our late-night special!
- 19:45-20:45 - Reunion (directed by Agnes Edvall Sweden)
For fans of: Yellowjackets (minus the cannibalism) · The World’s End · Facebook stalking
The snacks are prepared and the cheap wine is ready to be opened. A group of people bound together by a certain phase in life meet up for a reunion and you’re invited. Watch as conflicts resurface and relationships get rekindled throughout the night as you come to realise that you’re no better than the context you’re in. Can time heal all wounds and how much can you grow as a person really?
Content note: this show may deal with heavier topics. Please rest assured that the cast have discussed boundaries and safety beforehand.
- 21:15-22:15 - Living Dying Dead (Playing Dead Theatre UK)
For fans of: Medicine (hospital) · Medicine (soul) · Laughing when things get hard
Talking about death dying and bereavement doesn’t have to be taboo. The show begins with a character finding out that they are dying and ends with the moment of death. It’s the moments in between and the happy memories left behind that remind us that it’s ok to laugh even while you’re crying.
* Content note: This show explicitly tackles difficult themes but they are handled with great care by the cast (which is led by players who in the real world deal with death and bereavement professionally).
- 22:30-23:00 - Echoes of This Place (Empty Set Netherlands/UK)
For fans of: Immersive theatre · Architecture · Seeing what happens when walls actually talk
Echoes of This Place is inspired by the stories spaces hold and how we capture them in a moment making them tangible. In this immersive show the audience enters a room under renovation where they discover (through storytelling improvisation and visual art) the echoes of the room’s history.
No age restriction. Venue is wheelchair accessible. Doors open 30 minutes prior to performance. The venue does not have dedicated parking however local street parking is free. Be advised that the streets are very very narrow.
