Impact investing has moved well beyond its philanthropic roots, into something sharper: measurable benefits for people and the planet, delivered alongside real financial returns. From climate innovation to tackling inequality, it's shaping a more resilient, green and equitable future, one investment decision at a time.
It’s fair to say that the UK has staked its claim as a global leader in this space. In November 2025, the Government launched the Office for the Impact Economy, a clear front door for investment partnerships and impact capital, both domestic and international, aimed at pulling in more of the estimated £1.9 trillion global pool of impact capital. Domestically, the UK's social impact investment market grew past £11bn in 2024, and the wider impact economy, purpose-driven businesses, charities and social investors, is now valued at £428bn, around 15% of GDP.
But growth in the numbers doesn't mean the hard questions are solved. Different pools of capital, venture and government funding don't always work well together, proving impact at scale remains genuinely difficult, and policy keeps shifting under investors' feet, creating openings as fast as it closes them.
And that’s before we’ve even addressed the elephant in most rooms; AI. We have the fast-moving conversation about AI, both as infrastructure that could finally make impact measurement scalable, and as a force reshaping who needs support and how. The sector is being asked to adapt on every front at once.
So what does this mean for impact investment in 2027? The second edition of our yearly Impact Investment event, Impact Investing 2027: The Year Ahead, brings together voices in the space to discuss the elements shaping the space. Together they'll unpack how impact investment is evolving, the strategies gaining momentum, where government policy is opening doors and where it's closing them, and the role this investment plays in driving systemic change.
