Thanks to the community and governmental requests the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is coming to Eureka to talk about dam removal on the Eel River! We need everyone to speak out. These hearings will be on Sept 15, 2026. 6:00 p.m & Sept.16, 2026 9:00 a.m at the Wharfinger Building 1 Marina Way, Eureka CA If you can not come comments are due on Sept 18 and can be submitted at: ferconline.ferc.gov/FERCOnline.as ((QR Code below) or mailed to:
Debbie-Anne A. Reese, Secretary,
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
888 First Street, N.E.Washington, DC 20426
Your comments should be personal,
but some good points to include are:
DAMS MUST COME OUT. We support a timely NEPA process, and agree with the FERC analysis, keeping the dams is not an option.
WE NEED LOCAL WATER SOLUTIONS, BUT THEY ARE OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT: The local water agreement process is important, but is outside the scope of this process. FERC should include a “no NERF alternative” in case the NERF negotiations take longer than a dam removal plan or lead to a bad settlement that locals can not support.
DAM REMOVAL IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY, TRIBES AND RECREATION: Dam removal will benefit Tribes, water quality, and economies on the North coast. Restoring salmon runs & flows will have a ripple effect throughout North Coast communities and economics.
THE DAM REMOVAL PLAN SHOULD BENEFIT LOCAL PEOPLE & RESTORATION: The dam removal plans should prioritize creating local jobs, preventing further spread of invasive species, incorporating native and cultural plants into restoration, and protecting water quality.
