It’s Time for Kermis at Huis Horison!
People with intellectual disabilities remain among the most vulnerable and often overlooked members of society. Unlike those with visible physical disabilities, they are frequently misunderstood, isolated, hidden away or exploited, with limited opportunities to develop their abilities or contribute meaningfully to their communities. There is an urgent need for environments where people with intellectual disabilities can be nurtured and empowered to live with the dignity, purpose and sense of worth that every person deserves.
Since 1974, Huis Horison, situated in Onder-Papegaaiberg, Stellenbosch, has provided specialised care and a safe, dignified environment where adults with intellectual disabilities are supported as individuals and encouraged to reach their full potential. Huis Horison provides both a home and a protected work environment for 136 residents, as well as 24 individuals who participate in our day programme. Sixteen of our residents require full-time care, have no alternative place to call home, and are entirely dependent on Huis Horison for their wellbeing and support.
As a non-profit organisation, Huis Horison is responsible for generating much of its own funding. Our income is supplemented through fundraising initiatives, projects and generous donations from individuals, trusts and businesses.
Our annual Huis Horison Kermis (Fête) will take place on Saturday, 7 November 2026, at Huis Horison. It is our biggest fundraising event of the year and plays a critical role in the financial sustainability of our centre.
This much-loved Stellenbosch tradition promises a day filled with food, music, family entertainment, shopping and plenty of community spirit – all in support of adults with primary intellectual disabilities. All proceeds from the event go directly towards their care and support at Huis Horison.
