About this Event
HOW TO SEE AMERICA is a new monthly interview series at Manny’s hosted by Andrew Keen, the San Francisco-based presenter of the daily podcast Keen On America. The series features conversations with some of America’s most incisive observers about a nation that increasingly baffles both itself and the world.
The first guest is the Berkeley sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild, who has spent the past decade learning to understand disaffected citizens in the Republic's hinterland. Her National Book Award finalist Strangers in Their Own Land took her to the Louisiana bayou. Her latest, Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right, was named one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2024. It takes her to Appalachian coal country, where she uncovered the “pride paradox” of people who lost their jobs and status, blamed themselves, and then turned to a politics that converted this shame into blame.
Join Andrew and Arlie for a conversation about what it really takes to listen to the other America, and whether a divided country can still learn to imagine itself whole.
