USING AN ARTIST’S EYE WITH CAROLE CHALOUPKA
Join sculptor Carole Chaloupka for How to See a Bird, a hands-on workshop focused on observation, interpretation, and sculptural expression. Participants will learn how to use their artist's eye to study the shape and gesture of a bird. Working with Japanese air-dry stone clay, artists will develop sculptures that evolve from simple bird shapes into expressive contemporary works filled with personality, intention, and story.
Birds can seem like very simple shapes: a round feathered body with a tail and wings, a little head and pointy beak...but spend a little time really observing birds and you will see they are anything but simple shapes, they are animated, expressive creatures that use all parts of their bodies to express themselves.
A head cocks to one side in curiosity, a neck elongates almost comically towards something interesting, crest feathers stand up in concern, fright or threat. Birds are constantly responding to the world around them with their own body language, and these small gestures can communicate curiosity, concern, confidence; an entire little story unfolding before your eyes.
Using beautiful Japanese air-dry clay, Carole will demonstrate her process for simplifying a bird into strong sculptural forms, then use proportion, posture and all-important body language to bring it to life. The goal is not to painstakingly reproduce every detail, but to learn to look for what really matters: the curve of a body, where its weight sits, the direction of gaze and the tiny adjustments that can make a sculpture describe a living creature caught in a moment of its unique, individual life.
Choose a familiar garden favourite such as a chickadee, cardinal, blue jay or goldfinch, or create something entirely your own.
Students are free to make additional birds if time allows, experimenting with different breeds, shapes or poses.
The birds will be dried during the lunch break to then be ready for sanding and painting.
Carole will demonstrate a minimalistic colour-blocking painting method, but you are welcome to paint your birds however you wish.
All levels welcome, no previous sculpture experience required.
