About this Event
We are running two talks this evening, for tickets to 'A Psychologist's Guide to Decoding Dreams', please
We’re all in pursuit of happiness – why is it so elusive?
According to Ancient Greek Philosophy and Buddhism, happiness is too much to ask for—the best we can do is avoid suffering. Sometimes, even that seems out of reach!
But happiness matters, and we should not give up on it!
In this talk, we’ll explore 3 different ways of thinking about happiness:
- as unrestrained hedonism
- as freedom from pain
- as found indirectly, by pursuing more ‘meaningful’ things
We’ll explain why there are problems with all three approaches, and why real happiness needs to involve a little joy and euphoria, a life which fulfills your human potential, and the avoidance of any really extreme suffering.
Doors open at 8pm, talk starts at 8:15pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
Your speaker:
Noah lectures in philosophy at the University of Winchester and runs the College of Modern Anxiety, a social enterprise that promotes lifelong learning for liberation.
His innovative “playshop” approach to learning brings together revolutionary ideas from 25 centuries of philosophy, vibrant open discussions with opportunities to bring life experience to bear on abstract concepts, and carefully designed games to help people find creative ways to explore serious problems.
Noah is also a staff writer for Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton and is writing a book on Existentialism for Bloomsbury.
He recently began to study dance, which has taught him the joy of always being a beginner.
