How Maths Keeps Astronauts Alive

What does it take to survive in space? From launching rockets into orbit to making sure astronauts have enough oxygen to breathe, mathematics lies at the heart of every space mission.
Join Dr Jackie Bell, mathematician, theoretical particle physicist, and fellow scouser for an inspiring exploration of the role mathematics plays in human spaceflight. Drawing on her experiences as a candidate on the BBC Two series Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?, Jackie shares stories from astronaut selection alongside reflections on the challenges that engineers, scientists, and astronauts must overcome to live and work beyond Earth.
About the speaker
Dr Jackie Bell is an award-winning theoretical particle physicist, science communicator and Senior Teaching Fellow at Imperial College London, as well as an Honorary Fellow of the University of Liverpool. A Liverpool graduate with a PhD in theoretical particle physics, she has dedicated much of her career to inspiring people from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in STEM.
In 2017, Jackie was selected from more than 3,000 applicants as one of 12 candidates for the BBC science programme Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?, which put participants through challenges based on real astronaut selection and training. She has since continued to pursue her ambition of becoming an astronaut — and, perhaps, the first Scouser in space. Her work in science outreach and diversity has earned her numerous accolades, including a WISE Rising Star Award and the University of Liverpool Alumni Award.
