The Iowa City Public Library invites the community to come together to celebrate Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This vibrant tradition has roots in pre-Columbian, particularly Aztec, culture and is celebrated today throughout Mexico and parts of Central America, including Guatemala and El Salvador. Similar observances also take place in other parts of the world, such as the Philippines, where it is known as Undás.
Día de Muertos is a time to honor loved ones who have passed away by remembering their lives, laughter, and stories. Families create colorful altars, or ofrendas, adorned with photographs, candles, flowers, food, and other offerings that reflect the joy and continuity of life.
At the Library, we’ll celebrate with art, stories, food, and community.
Schedule is as follows:
4:30-6- Prepare the Ofrenda
6-7- Lotería and voting for Sugar Skull Piñatas
7-8:30- Enjoy a meal in community- we'll have Pan de Muerto and tamales!
Everyone is welcome.
Open to the public
If you need disability-related accommodations in order to participate in this event, please contact the Library.
