Explore air pressure and build a pneumatic model together at the first of our monthly Pop-Up STEM Labs for home-educated families.
About this Event

By popular demand, our home ed sessions are back in a new monthly format at FarGo Village!

Pneumatics & Engineering is the first of our monthly Pop-Up STEM Labs for home-educated children and their grown-ups. Each month will explore a different science or engineering theme.

Explore how air pressure creates movement, then build and test a pneumatic model together. Choose from different projects, adapt a design or try an idea of your own, with guidance throughout.

What will we do?

How can pushing one syringe move something at the other end of a tube?

We’ll investigate how air pressure transfers a force through a connected system, make predictions and compare what happens when we change things.

Then we’ll use that science to build a working model. Families will work with syringes, tubing and construction materials, thinking about joints, moving parts and how to support their designs.

There’s time to test your mechanism, identify what needs adjusting and improve it, with guidance to help you understand the science as you work.

Choose your project

There will be different starting designs, including:

  • A crane or lifting mechanism
  • A gripping hand or arm
  • An animal with moving parts

Follow a starting design, adapt one or develop an idea of your own. No previous engineering experience is needed, and your creation comes home with you.

Children and adults take part together

This is a family workshop. Grown-ups join in with the experimenting, building and problem-solving. At least one responsible adult must stay and take part throughout.

The session is ideal for ages 8–14. Younger children may join in at their grown-up’s discretion, with their support.

What does the £25 family ticket include?

  • Up to four people, including at least one responsible adult
  • One complete project kit to share
  • 1 hour 45 minutes of guided science and engineering
  • All project materials
  • Your family’s creation to take home

Online booking fees may apply.

Need an extra child place or another project kit?

These options are only available when booking through our website:

  • Extra child place, including an extra project kit: £15
  • Extra project kit for someone already included in your family group: £15

Both options require a £25 family ticket. An extra project kit does not add another attendee place.

If you need either option, please book your family ticket and extras together through the STEM Goes Wild website. These extras are not available through Eventbrite.
