‘Holding Space: Grounded’ is a group exhibition curated by Elephant Room Gallery co-owner, Kimberly Leja Atwood, and features Chicago-based artists. The exhibition opens on September 26th from 11am to 5pm during the 13th Annual Beverly Art Walk and runs through October 24th. The exhibition is located in the Simmerling Gallery at the Beverly Arts Center, located at 2407 W 111th St. in Chicago.
Holding Space: Grounded is a group exhibition that reflects on the ways we navigate both internal and external pressures. To hold space is a reminder to pause, adjust, and connect with others or return to ourselves. Through diverse perspectives, the artists in this exhibition translate a moment of stillness into visual form. The idea of being grounded evokes different things for different people; a place of refuge, a fleeting moment, a remembered presence, a repetitive action, an emotional state. Each artwork created becomes an interpretation of what it means to hold space and be grounded; inhaling, exhaling, being present. The creative process in itself can be an act of grounding - making room for reflection, restoration, and connection. In bringing these works together, Holding Space: Grounded explores both the healing process of making and the object that remains.

Lewis, Czr Prz, Danny J Martinez, Darin Latimer, Delisha, Fantasía Ariel, George Keaton, Ish Muhammad, James Nelson, Jamiah Calvin, Jennifer Cronin, Justin Suico, Keelan McMorrow, Lo Marie, Mimi Zaphiratos, Myron Laban, Rae Denise, Rine Boyer, Shanna Zentner, Tyler Bernard Anthony and Zor Zor Zor.

About the Curator
Kimberly Leja Atwood co-founded Elephant Room Gallery in Chicago in 2009 with the goal of providing a platform for local, underrepresented, and emerging artists. For the past 17 years she has worked as director of the gallery, curating exhibitions and collaborating with nonprofit organizations and community partners. She has curated numerous exhibitions at the gallery as well as at various other spaces including The Blackstone Hotel, The Other Art Fair Chicago, Frame Chicago, Blackbird Framing and White Ripple Gallery. Kimberly’s background as an artist is what led to her desire to curate and she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Video from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2006. In 2020, she independently published a book of black-and-white portraits documenting Chicago-based artists in their studio environments.
About the Art Walk
The 13th Annual Beverly Art Walk is a celebration of art and music showcasing a diverse array of unique cultural assets, artists' home studios, pop-up galleries, exhibitions and art environments across Beverly/Morgan Park. This free, family-friendly event features 100+ juried artists in 40 neighborhood venues, the popular Uprising Craft Market at 103rd and Wood, The Family Fun Park at Sutherland School, live music and public art activations everywhere.
