At noon on Wednesday, October 14, James Andrew Whitaker, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Southern Mississippi, will discuss his fieldwork in Sinoe County, Liberia, and Mississippi as part of the History Is Lunch series. During the 1830s and 1840s, the Mississippi State Colonization Society created a colony called “Mississippi in Africa” in what is now Sinoe County, which involved almost 600 African Americans from Mississippi. Whitaker’s book "Met by the Love of Liberty: History and Identity in Americo-Liberian Memory" focuses on the history and aftermath of this Mississippi settlement through interviews with members of descendant communities. This free event will take place in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums and will stream live on the MDAH Facebook page and YouTube channel. Copies of Whitaker's book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow. For more information, call 601-576-6850 or email [email protected].
