About this Event
About this event
Join military historian Jahan Mahmood for The War Against Nazi Germany: The Contribution of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh Soldiers in the Liberation of Europe.
Featuring a talk, a short film and the launch of Himmah’s World War heritage project, this event explores a shared history too often overlooked.
Millions of soldiers from Asia and Africa served during the two World Wars, while millions more supported the war effort as civilians. Although their contributions were widely reported at the time, their stories became less visible in the memorials, books, films and paintings that shaped Britain’s remembrance of the wars.
This absence has affected whose experiences are recognised and who sees themselves reflected in Britain’s history.
Through the contribution of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh soldiers to the liberation of Europe, this talk will help recover those stories and explore their role in defending Britain and resisting fascism.
About the speaker
Jahan Mahmood is a military historian specialising in Muslim soldiers who served in Europe during the Second World War. His particular research interest is the Italian campaign of 1943–1945.
Himmah’s World War heritage project
The event will also mark the launch of Himmah’s World War heritage project, providing an opportunity to learn about the project and the histories it seeks to explore.
