Politická a územní deregulace v rámci neoliberalizace učinila z tržní logiky dominantní princip dnešní doby.

In the face of the polarized positions and violent confrontations of the present moment – including climate crisis, migration, housing shortage, and escalating economic and social inequality – the call for a politically and socially engaging architecture is pressing. The built environment was a cornerstone in the social contract of the 20th century welfare state, but today the relationship between the state and the built environment is radically different, and the role of architecture in societal change is far from obvious.
This talk addresses architecture’s agency in a transforming political landscape where a neoliberal agenda radically has changed the conditions for the discipline. I argue that there is a need to broaden the concept of architecture to reveal its role in societal processes to critically analyze how architecture operates today, and, not least, to support new possibilities to bring about change. The discipline of architecture involves legally instigated infrastructures such as building codes and decision-making systems, but, as neoliberalization has shown, it also involves shifts in mentality that define the value of architecture. Here, I want to show why we must keep revisiting these determining mechanisms to challenge the discipline's role and how architectural history can offer fruitful inspiration for future change.
Political and spatial deregulations of neoliberalization have made market logic the hegemonic rationale of today. I will speculate about a new creative bureaucracy and what it could bring to the discipline of architecture. This talk introduces the concept of a radical bureaucracy influenced by earlier work with full-scale laboratories directed by women architects in the 1960s. The know-how developed in these labs was aimed at empowering the user and gave agency to groups often neglected in the commercial design- and production processes.
