Hearth Fire Brew: Ritual, Remedy, and the Fire Cider TraditionThe seasonal changes this time of year is a time that calls us back to the hearth. To tend before the wintering.
The gardens are heavy with the last abundance of summer. The evenings are arriving earlier and we begin thinking about what needs to be gathered, preserved, prepared and carried with us into those darker months.
On September 25th, Forest, Stone and Sea and Let's Be Holistic invite you to gather around the table with us for for an evening of folk herbalism, seasonal ritual and medicine making.
We’ll be gathering just days after the Autumn Equinox and on the eve of the Harvest Full Moon, a threshold between seasons and a time traditionally associated with harvest, gratitude, preparation and gathering what we need for the season ahead.
Together, we’ll make Fire Cider, a warming vinegar-based herbal preparation filled with roots, herbs, citrus, spices and other ingredients traditionally used in the home apothecary and folk traditions.
Going deeper than simply following a recipe, We’ll explore the folk traditions surrounding herbal vinegars and tonics, the story of modern Fire Cider, and the plants themselves. We’ll talk about their traditional herbal uses alongside their folklore, symbolism and energetic properties.
And then we’ll make. Together. In Community held anchored in the intention of healing and shared medicine. This is the part of medicine making and story that we especially want to share.
We’ll chop roots and herbs, fill our jars, pour vinegar, talk, learn and intentionally create something with our own hands.
Knowing what grows around us. Learning how plants have traditionally been used. Reclaiming some of the knowledge that once lived in kitchens, gardens and family traditions. Making something with care and intention, sharing what we know with one another, and carrying that knowledge forward.
Shared ritual, medicine and story.
It is very special, sacred and powerful to gathering around a table and creating medicine together. About understanding not only what we are putting into the jar, but why. About recognizing that the care, love and intention we bring to the making can be part of the practice too.
As the Harvest Moon grows full above us, we’ll gather what has ripened, work with roots and herbs from the earth, and create something intended to nourish us through the season ahead.
A little story. A little ritual. A little remedy. A little magic.
And perhaps a inspiration and nudge to return to an older way of gathering, tending and preparing together.
You’ll leave with your own jar of Fire Cider to tend at home, the knowledge to make it again, and hopefully a deeper relationship with the plants and traditions that went into it.
We will have Hubbard Gardens ready to drink fire cider available for purchase as well.
