From Clinical Innovation to Market Readiness: The Role of Human Factors, Industrial Design & UX in Medical Devices
Join Loft Design, the New England Chapter of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (NEC HFES), and IDSA Boston for an evening of discussion, insights, and networking at the intersection of medical technology, human factors, industrial design, and user experience.
We’ll kick off with an exclusive panel featuring the team from Spryte Medical, sharing insights from the development of their AI-enabled neuro Optical Coherence Tomography (nOCT) imaging platform and the regulatory and clinical milestones involved in advancing an innovative technology toward clinical use. Their insights on the challenges of translating breakthrough medical technology into clinical practice.
Our discussion will explore the role of human factors and usability engineering throughout the medical device development lifecycle, including:
- How early research and iterative usability testing uncover use errors, identify workflow challenges, and inform design decisions.
- How validation studies evaluate whether intended users can use a device safely and effectively in its intended use environments, supporting regulatory submissions and risk management.
- Understanding the human factors evidence that may support 510(k) submissions and other regulatory pathways for devices requiring IDE approval and pivotal clinical trials.
- Designing devices, interfaces, and physical interactions that work within real clinical environments, accommodate diverse users, and support safe, efficient decision-making.
- Connecting UX, ID, ergonomics, interface design, accessibility, and usability engineering with risk management and the overall user experience.
Whether you work in medical device design, engineering, clinical research, regulatory affairs, quality, or human factors, this is an opportunity to exchange practical insights with professionals navigating the complexities of bringing new medical technologies to market.
Following the panel, stay for a relaxed networking mixer with colleagues across the HealthTech community. Enjoy food and drinks, make new connections, and continue the conversation about how human-centered design can advance medical innovation.
