Midlands Light Opera Society is excited to present the opera Hansel and Gretel October 8 - 11 at Bethel UMC (4600 Daniel Drive).This performance is an original adaptation of the opera using Humperdinck's beautiful music with a fresh new libretto and dialogue. It is suitable for all ages.
Hansel (played as a child by Lina Cordova and as a teen by Evelyn Clary) and his sister Gretel (played as a child by Lilith Clary and a teen by Casiphia Wohlfeld) have lived happily in their village with their Papa (Roddey Smith) and Mama (Bethany Cely), until an evil witch (Maria Beery) has terrorized the town by kidnapping children. Hansel and Gretel are tired of being safely stuck inside their home, so they decide to venture into the woods to destroy the witch. They are watched over by the Sandman (Patrick Pilat) and Dew Fairy (Laura Hutchins). Can these two kids beat the witch and save their town? You'll have to come see to find out!
Rounding out the cast are townspeople Alexandra Agee, Liz Barrett, Abigail Brandt, Chavous Camp, Helen Camp, Will Cordova, Robin Dorfer, Bob Folts, Annya Glass, Tilly Haynes, Alex Mabrey, Janice Mabrey (who is also a flute soloist), Bri Palmer, Daisy Palmer, Ember Rucker, and Amelia Schmidt.
This opera is directed by Hollie Smith, musically directed by Grant Hamby, accompanied by Lucinda Shields, costumed by Rob Richards, choreographed by Maria Beery, and produced by Evelyn Clary.
Performances are Thursday 10/8 and Friday 10/9 at 7:30; and Saturday 10/10 and Sunday 10/11 at 3:00.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for seniors, students and children, and can be purchased online (link will be up in September), or at the door with cash, check or card. We will be selling concessions as well.
