Pre-concert talk begins at 6:45 pmAncient Airs and Dances
Ancient Airs and Dances takes its name from Ottorino Respighi’s three orchestral suites inspired by Italian Renaissance music. Gut, Wind, and Wire explores some of the original tunes that fascinated Respighi, alongside music from across the centuries: English country dances, tunes from Shakespeare’s plays, Scottish Baroque music, new compositions by lutenist Ronn McFarlane, and traditional Irish tunes. Dance music from the lute book of Joanambrosio Dalza and Michael Praetorius’ Terpsichore add further color to this musical journey. The music is performed on lute, viol, bagpipes, cittern, flutes, fifes, and percussion by three musicians whose musical partnership has flourished for more than four decades.
Gut, Wind, and Wire (a trio formed by longtime Baltimore Consort members, Mark Cudek, Ronn McFarlane, and Mindy Rosenfeld) is named for the natural elements that bring our instruments to life: gut strings, wire strings, and wind (breath). Since its beginning, Gut, Wind & Wire has explored a wide variety of music from the 16th and 17th centuries, music from folk traditions and even original music. Through maple, boxwood, spruce, rosewood, blackwood, tulipwood, strings of sheep gut and metal (on cittern, viola da gamba, riq, lute, flutes, fifes, and bagpipes), our sound springs forth through touch and breath. Mark, Mindy, and Ronn have been making music together for over four decades!
