Cruise the San Francisco Bay on a vintage 1928 wooden "Monterey" fishing boat called the "Golden Gate" with local legend Captain Sal Alioto.
About this Event

Step aboard a rare piece of San Francisco’s working history. This original 1928 Monterey Fishing Boat is captained by born-and-raised San Franciscan, Captain Sal Alioto. The Golden Gate has been passed down through the generations of Sal’s Sicilian-American family, along with the proud tradition of fishing. Departing from the small wharf behind Tarantino’s Restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf, the tour offers an intimate and unforgettable look at the city’s iconic northern waterfront.
From the moment you leave the dock, you’re immersed in a slower and more soulful version of the city. The vessel was originally built by Italian-American fishermen and gently rocks through Aquatic Park. It continues past the historic Hyde Street Pier, where a collection of National Park Service ships serve as quiet reminders of the Bay's long maritime legacy.
As the boat glides westward, you'll take in panoramic views of Fort Mason’s red rooftops, which once marked a bustling Army supply port. From there, the coastline opens up into the wide green stretch of the Marina Green and Crissy Field. These two beloved parks hug the shore and are always full of local life.
Further along, you'll pass the St. Francis Yacht Club, where elegant sailboats dot the marina. Nearby, the curious stone structure of the Wave Organ juts into the Bay. If the tide is right, you might even hear the low gurgle of the waves as they hum through its pipes.
Look south and inland for a glimpse of the grand dome of the Palace of Fine Arts, peeking above the treetops. This is one of the city’s most treasured architectural relics. To the north, Alcatraz Island looms in the distance with a haunting silhouette full of legend and lore.
As the tour nears its crescendo, the Golden Gate Bridge begins to dominate the horizon. Depending on the weather and tides, your boat may pass under or alongside this engineering marvel. The view offers a rare and unforgettable perspective that few locals or tourists ever get to see.
This is more than a boat tour. It is a floating front row seat to San Francisco’s layered history, led by a captain whose roots run deep in the city’s maritime traditions. You can expect personal storytelling, historic insights, and a unique connection to the Bay that only this vessel and vantage point can offer.
