Gold Leader is a six-piece Denver jazz-funk collective on Color Red Records — bassist Zach Jackson, drummer-producer Will Trask, keyboardist Eric Luba, guitarist Thomas Jennings, trumpet/flugelhorn player Carrie Jennings, and saxophonist Alex Cazet. Founded by Jackson at Color Red Studios in 2018, the band drew players from three of Denver's most active groups: Mama Magnolia, Great American Taxi, and Manycolors. Their debut LP was born from a three-night sold-out New Year's 2021 run at Globe Hall opening for Neal Francis, where the band wrote new material to fill three different sets. Tracked at Luba's More Noise & Sounds Studio and produced by Trask, the record sits in the modern jazz-funk continuum — kin to Lettuce, Soulive, Ghost-Note, Snarky Puppy and Butcher Brown on this side of the Atlantic, and Yussef Dayes, Kamaal Williams, and Ezra Collective on the other. Instrumental groove music with a horn-led center. Eddie Roberts calls Gold Leader "the sound of Denver.”
