GLASTONBURY'S BOYS & THE GREAT WAR The summer may be over, but our events soldier on. Our next talk will be about Glastonbury's role during the First World War. We will be discussing how men were recruited, how many never came back, how the local population was affected, how factories and workplaces were altered, how farming was changed and even how the digging of peat helped us win the war!
I will be doing the talk, uniformed and equipped as a member of the Somerset Light Infantryman. We will be discuss the horrendous losses that unit suffered on the disastrous first day of the Somme.
If that was not all, we will have an opportunity to hold genuine relics from the conflict including a .303 Lee Enfield rifle used on the Western Front in 1917!
