Please join us at our monthly chapter meeting on Monday, November 9, 2026 at 7:00 PM when we will welcome our speaker Genevieve Carey to present her talk: Custodians of Yowli (Shearwater): the Tjaltjraak Flyways Program
In southwestern Australia, the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC) is leading a migratory seabird tagging project. The Short-tailed Shearwater (Yowli, Ardenna tenuirostris) migrates from Kepa Kurl (Esperance, Western Australia) for more than 15,000kms (~9300mi) to Hooper Bay, Alaska, staging pit stops in New Caledonia and far north Japan before returning home to nest in the archipelago of Kepa Kurl – a migratory path that has yet to be recorded, until now.
This project is a powerful example of an international, First Nations-led approach to conservation, blending cultural science with cutting-edge technology to track the movements of shearwaters across vast oceanic distances; to better protect these remarkable seabirds. By tracking their migrations across oceans, the team is uncovering vital insights that will guide ETNTAC’s conservation programs, strengthen partnerships across Australia, and connect cultural groups that share the custodial obligations to safeguard these species and their habitats. During Genevieve’s talk, we will learn about the amazing seabird tagging project, hear the details of its intended outcomes and initial findings, and discover its implications for the field of conservation.
Genevieve Carey has a background in anthropology, archaeology, and conservation biology. She has worked under cultural guidance on this seabird tagging project and many others in southwestern Australia and across Alaska.
The meeting will be held in Room 110 in the Interdisciplinary Sciences Building (ISB) on the University of Montana campus. The building lies on the south end of campus on Beckwith Avenue between Maurice and Mansfield avenues. You also have the option of watching the meeting over Zoom, a link will be posted here once available.
