Gazing With Care: Black Image & Deciding What We Keep

One Night Only | Limited Capacity | RSVP Now

In dialogue with EXPO Chicago and the city’s evolving art landscape, Black Film Club Collective invites you to an intimate evening of film, conversation, and reflection at Three Cities Social.

We are always documenting.
But not everything we capture is meant to be kept.

Gazing With Care: Black Image & Deciding What We Keep is an invitation to slow down the gaze—to consider the weight of visibility and the responsibility of being seen.

This is a curated prelude to the fair. A space to arrive with context.

The Evening Will Include

• A screening of Black Twitter: A People’s History (Episode 1)
• A live panel featuring journalists, photographers, and their muses
• A guided wine experience led by Derrick Westbrook of Wine Country
• A room designed for intentional dialogue and exchange

Together, We’ll Explore

• What does it mean to gaze responsibly?
• How do we document community without extraction?
• What does it mean to be seen and at what cost?
• What stories, images, and memories are we choosing to carry forward?

Through a screening of Black Twitter: A People’s History and a conversation with journalists, photographers, and models, we’ll explore the tension between visibility and care documentation and extraction.

Rooted in Black Film Club Collective’s practice of vernacular archiving, this gathering considers how everyday cultural expression—across both physical and digital spaces becomes part of our collective record.

Because every image holds a choice.
And every choice shapes what lives beyond us.

This is not just a screening, it’s a space to reflect on how we document ourselves, how culture is carried forward, and what it means to preserve these histories with care.

Doors open at 6:00 PM. Early arrival is encouraged.
Spots are limited. Secure yours before it’s too late.
