🧠Lecture: "Using Cosmological Simulations To Understand Our Universe"
🎤 Speaker: George Iskander
Cosmology is the study of the Universe as a whole: its origin, its evolution, and its structure. But with only one Universe to observe—and no way to run controlled experiments on it—how can we ever hope to truly understand it?
Enter computational cosmology. Since the 1980s, rapidly expanding computing power has allowed scientists to build increasingly detailed simulations of the cosmos, transforming our understanding of how the Universe works on the largest scales.
In this accessible, all-levels talk, George Iskander will introduce the basics of cosmology, explore some of its biggest open questions, and show how computer simulations have revolutionized the field. If time allows, he will also share insights from his own research on quantum dark matter.
George Iskander is a PhD candidate in physics at the University of Chicago and an Egyptian-American originally from New Jersey. Passionate about outreach and teaching, he holds a College Teaching Certificate from UChicago. Outside the lab, he enjoys DIY, film, the gym, and writing, with work appearing in Scientific American, Sight & Sound, and MUBI Notebook.
