OTHER WAYS TO TAKE ACTION:
* Politely complain to local businesses that carry real fur, down, wool or leather products! Urge businesses to fake it. If you see real fur in a local store, please let us know. Post one-star reviews on their Facebook pages too, asking them to use humane alternatives.
* Tell H&M to stop selling wool: https://investigations.peta.org/nativa-wool/#action
* Call on Urban Outfitters to commit to only animal-free fashion across all its brands: https://headlines.peta.org/urban-outfitters/#action
* Urge Coach to ditch animal leather: https://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/coach-leather/
* Urge your state legislators to support a ban on the sale of new fur! Unfortunately the MA fur ban bill "died" this session, but next session it will be refiled. https://www.mspca.org/animal-policy/fur-bill/

Cows, sheep, rabbits, birds, and other animals exploited for fashion are social, inquisitive individuals who form meaningful relationships and care for their families. These animals aren’t clothing. They feel pain, fear, and joy, just as humans do.
The fur industry is dying, but we must continue informing the public about the true face of the cruel fur trade. Consumers must be aware of the millions of innocent fur-bearing animals who live in torment on fur farms, going mad in filthy tiny wire cages and exposed to the elements or trapped in anguish until they die alone or are brutally killed and at times even skinned alive.
Using animals for their skin, wool, and feathers wreaks havoc on the planet, too, contributing to land degradation, deforestation, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Fur production creates pollution too. On fur factory farms, waste runoff from animals pollutes the soil and waterways. The tanning and dying process uses toxic chemicals, like chromium and formaldehyde, to prevent the skin from decaying. Not surprisingly, truth-in-advertising committees across Europe have ruled that advertising fur as environmentally friendly is “false and misleading.” In 2018, the French advertising authority concluded, “numerous reliable reports show that the production of fur is extremely cruel and polluting, and that the final product contains toxic substances.”
Each year, approximately 50 million animals are raised in horrific conditions on fur farms around the world, which often have NO regulations, and killed for their pelts. This number does not include over a billion rabbits that are also killed each year (70 million alone in France).
But the future of fashion is already here! More companies than ever are using innovative vegan fabrics made from plants and recycled materials that are kind to animals and far more sustainable. Research shows that cow-skin leather has a carbon footprint more than 12 times that of any vegan leather.
The global support and worldwide growing awareness about the true face of the fur trade has brought about many important victories, including recent landmark decisions by Etsy, New York Fashion Week organizers and the Emmy Award organizers to ban fur!
There have also been ground-breaking anti-fur bills. In 2019 CA became the first state to ban the sale of new fur products. And as of 2025, six countries in the EU still engage in fur farming, while three of these have implemented legal bans on the practice. Over the past two decades, more than 30 countries have either voted to ban fur farming or introduced stricter regulations.
Also, India has phased out fur skin imports and São Paulo, Brazil has banned fur imports and sales. In 2021, Estonia passed a ban on fur farming and Israel banned the sale of fur in the fashion industry. In retail, Massachusetts-based TJX, as well as numerous top brands and retailers—including Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Canada Goose, Chanel, Coach, Neiman Marcus, Burberry, Versace, Donna Karan, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Armani—have announced fur-free policies.
We still have a long way to go with wool, down and leather, so we must continue urging people to not buy real animal materials and pushing for fur bans. As one of our signs says..."real women fake it!"
Hope to see you there!
For the Animals,
Sheryl
