EPEL lectureFrom Helsinki to Oslo: Exploring North Korea’s Relations with the Nordic countries from Diplomatic Recognition to the 2000s
The Nordic countries were among the first Western countries to recognise the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 1973. This presentation discusses critical junctures in the history of their relations and asks: What strategies did North Korea employ to gain recognition, and how did the Nordic countries respond? Why did the Nordic governments handle the 1976 smuggling incident (slightly) differently? What were the Nordic countries’ role and priorities as providers of humanitarian assistance to the DPRK? Particular attention will also be paid to the DPRK’s foreign policy objectives and the role of significant third countries. This is an EPEL lecture, supported by AKSE (Association for Korean Studies in Europe)
The lecturer: Sabine Burghart, PhD, is University Lecturer and Academic Director at the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS), University of Turku in Finland. Her current research concerns the DPRK's relations with Europe's neutral states during the Cold War (esp. Finland and Austria) and she cooperates on larger project that explores the Nordic countries' relations with North Korea. She spent more than five years of her professional career in Korea, and facilitated various capacity building projects and three EU-DPRK economic workshops in the DPRK.
