Millworks, in collaboration with Abodo, invites architects and specifiers to join us for an in-person accredited CPD exploring the science, specification and detailing behind sustainable timber façades.
Timber is central to conversations about sustainable design, but “natural” does not automatically mean sustainable.
This session examines what really determines a timber façade’s environmental performance and longevity — from species selection and durability through to weathering, maintenance, and end-of-life considerations.
Participants will explore how material choices and technical detailing work together to influence long-term performance, including emerging approaches such as fast-growing plantation species and thermal modification technology.
The session will cover:
- Timber species selection, durability and expected service life
- Embodied carbon and environmental performance
- Renewable, fast-growing plantation forestry
- Thermal modification technology
- Weathering, finishes and maintenance
- Why detailing is important for performance
- Fixing methods and timber movement
- Circular design principles in facade specification
