🎬 This Friday the 13th, Indigenous horror takes over the big screen!Join us on Friday, November 13, at 10:00 PM at the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina, for a special late-night screening of Slash/Back, presented as part of the 30th Annual Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast!
Directed by Inuit filmmaker Nyla Innuksuk, Slash/Back (2022) takes audiences to the remote Arctic community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, where a group of Inuit teenage girls discover that their hometown is under attack by mysterious, shape-shifting aliens.
Armed with determination, friendship, traditional hunting knowledge, and a few unexpected weapons, these young women must defend their community against an otherworldly invasion.
But Slash/Back is more than a science fiction horror film. Beneath the action and suspense lies a powerful exploration of colonialism, Indigenous identity, ancestral knowledge, and sovereignty.
The film invites audiences to consider the connections between alien invasion and the historical theft of Indigenous lands, while exploring how young Native people reconnect with their cultural identities and discover strength in the teachings of their ancestors.
Through its fearless young protagonists, Slash/Back reminds us that traditional knowledge is not simply something of the past. It remains a source of strength, survival, and community resilience today.
🎤 Stay after the screening for a community talkback! We'll explore the film's deeper themes, including colonialism and the Land Back movement, Indigenous representation in horror, the importance of cultural knowledge, and the responsibility of communities to protect their people and homelands.
Join us as we continue celebrating 30 years (1996–2026) of the Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast, bringing Indigenous stories, filmmakers, and perspectives to audiences across South Carolina.
