Ten years ago, I released my first album, Rushing Past Willow. I’m returning to that music for an anniversary concert at Constellation, and I’d love for you to join. These pieces helped me find my voice as a composer, performer, and artist. At the time, it felt like one-off project that brought together research, a lineage, and an approach to the saxophone that resonated with me. The music grew out of improvisation, experimentation, and time spent listening closely to what the alto, tenor, and bass saxophone could do while diving deep into the saxophone's idiomatic language, while also developing as an audio engineer and videographer. Breath, voice, and repeating patterns became ways of exploring things that were harder to put into words at the time: memory, loss, connection, and the passage of time.
A lot has happened since then. The music from RPW ended up in ski videos, dance collaborations, art films, led to new collaborations, and toward projects like Enter Branch and Chamber. I can still hear the beginnings of that work in Rushing Past Willow. Coming back to these pieces is a chance to listen to them again from where I am now, to find out what feels familiar, what feels different, and what I’m still discovering.
Whether you’ve been listening since the album came out or have only recently found my music, I’d love to share this part of the story with you. Come celebrate ten years of Rushing Past Willow with me.
