We are marking the IAU's global celebration, "A New Perspective of the Solar System", with free events across the city, each shining a light on a different part of the sky.An early (chilly) start at the Wellington waterfront to view the Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and Matariki with the Wellington Astronomical Society's Dobsonian and digital telescopes. What is 100 Hours of Astronomy?
100 Hours of Astronomy is a annual global celebration organised by the International Astronomical Union's Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) that invites people worldwide to connect with the night sky and space science.
It brings communities together across vibrant cities and remote areas alike under a shared sky. Groups all around the world will be hosting public stargazing, workshops, educational talks, and hands-on activities.
The 2026 event runs from 1 - 4 October, focusing on the theme "A New Perspective on the Solar System", which explores how new discoveries and space missions continually reshapes our understanding of our cosmic neighbourhood.
