James Baldwin once wrote, "Freedom is something people take, and people are as free as they want to be." Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory, coming soon to the Hunter, features contemporary artists who explore the relationship between history, memory, and freedom, drawing on archival material to reveal how the past continues to shape the present.
Join us for the opening reception to be among the first to experience the exhibition.
Opening is free and open to the public as part of the Hunter’s Throwback Thursday Series.
Generous support for Throwback Thursday provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory is curated by Cheryl Finley, Ph.D., and Deborah Willis, Ph.D., and originated as a FotoFocus exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, on the occasion of the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial. The traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Exhibitions, Pasadena, California.
