About this Event
This 2-day conference proposes to explore the reconstruction – material, intellectual, and digital – of dispersed manuscripts and fragments, in all traditions of the vast geographical region of Greater Iran and eastern Islamic lands, including (but not limited to) Persian, Arabic, Armenian, as well as Avestan and Middle Persian (Pahlavi) codices within Zoroastrian traditions.
Manuscripts from the Persianate world and Islamicate lands are among the most widely dispersed written artefacts in global collections today. Historical processes such as dynastic change, war, trade, colonial collecting, the art market, and modern institutional practices have resulted in the physical separation of manuscripts into fragments, single folios, detached illustrations, or partial codices now held across libraries, museums, and private collections worldwide. While this dispersal has long posed challenges for scholarship, it also offers new opportunities for rethinking the transmission of knowledge, artistic practice, and cultural exchange across regions and periods.
By bringing together scholars working on fragments, codices, texts, images, and digital tools, the conference aims to foreground both traditional manuscript studies and emerging methodologies that enable new forms of connection, comparison, and reconstruction.
