Abstract:
Recent republican readings treat Marx's critique of political economy as a critique of domination and communism as non-domination generalised. This article contests their shared premise: that freedom names what communism secures. Reconstructing freedom as a social form, it argues that the Grundrisse derives freedom and equality from exchange and states their realisation as unfreedom and inequality, that the legal subject belongs to the commodity-form as fetish-character rather than function, and that Capital's doubly free worker makes freedom and compulsion to contract one determination. Capital's ascent from abstract to concrete shows its categories insufficient without redeeming them; the republican move from diagnosis to remedy requires an affirmative inference the ascent does not license. Determinately negated, freedom proves non-identical, objectively valid and untrue at once: the critique's object, not its norm. Communism is better theorised as the abolition of the relations that produce freedom in its capitalist form than as freedom's realisation.
