Here, sculpture is not a static object to be observed from a distance, but a continuous action, an open process completed only through human touch, presence, and gesture.
Everything on the river is in a state of flux. The water moves, the light shifts, and the work itself refuses to stand still.
Anke introduces a large-scale clay sculpture initially shaped in her studio. Placed on the raft, this raw clay form enters the current, becoming a living, co-created group sculpture.
As we drift down the Spree to an atmospheric ambient set, you are invited to step beyond the role of passive spectator and become an active participant in the work’s evolution.
Through touch, pressure, mark making and shared gesture, the group imprints its collective energy into the soft material. The sculpture changes continuously over the course of the journey: evolving with every wave, every turn of the river, and every hand that touches it.
In this space, the act of engagement becomes the artwork itself. The boundaries blur between artist, audience, object, and element, transforming a single piece of raw earth into a shared memory carried by water.
What to Expect
• Sculpture as Process: Engage directly with raw clay as a living, shifting material. No prior experience with art or ceramic making is needed. Your physical touch and presence are the work.
• Ambient Soundscape: A live audio set by El capitan echoing the rhythm of the water and guiding the tactile pace aboard the raft.
• A Journey in Flux: An intimate sunset gathering on Die Liebelei, experiencing Berlin through a shared ritual of creation and movement on the water.
Good to Know / What to Bring
• What to Wear: Late September evenings on the Spree get cool quickly once the sun sets. Please bring warm layers, cozy knitwear, or a windbreaker.
Practicalities:
• All materials are provided. Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in (raw clay washes out easily).
• Feel free to bring drinks and food you like to share with each other.
• Capacity: Space on the raft is strictly limited to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Please reserve your spot in advance.
About the Artist
Anke Buchmann (b. Germany) is a Berlin-based visual artist and founder of HANDFUL whose work combines ceramics, performance, engagement and sculptural research to explore identity and somatic memory.
“I use clay to create a tangible documentation of lived experience that explores the tension between disciplined structures and the radical freedom of the body.”
A graduate of Central Saint Martins (UAL), her work has been developed and exhibited in Berlin, London, and France as part of the British Ceramic Biennial, Berlin Art Week,
Ceramic Art London, CSM Lethaby Gallery or Wellcome Collection, London.
