Flannagan Cup – Open Water SwimWaitangi Day: Saturday 6th February 2027
The iconic open water swim at Ngamotu Beach has been on the Taranaki calendar since 1916.
Set along the beautiful west coast with Mt Taranaki as a backdrop it is a favoured stop for both locals and people on the Open Water Swim circuit.
There are a variety of categories and distances which makes this race unique and great for swimmers attempting ocean swimming for the first time.
Race, Times & Pricing
Note: This year all competitors in the 1.2km and 3.6km races will start at the same time.
Give-it-a-go 400m
9:20am start- An ideal introduction for newcomers or those returning to open water swimming. Entry cost $25.
Swimming Taranaki Relay Race
9:40am start- Three members per team each swimming 200m. Each swimmer completes one lap changing over on the start/finish line. Open to all swimmers, 13 years and under on race day. Awarded to first team completing the course. Entry cost $15 per team.
Flannagan Cup
8:00am start- 3.6 km (approx.) 3 laps of the course. Open to all swimmers 14 years and over. Trophies to be awarded for the fastest male and female in the following categories:
Under 16 years old,
Open (all ages)
Over 30 years old
Over 60 years old.
In addition to the above trophies, there are trophies for the first non-wetsuits swimmer home and the sealed handicap trophy (The Flannagan Cup started out as a handicapped race) which you are eligible for if you have competed in the previous 5 years. Entry cost $85 and includes a Flannagan Cup baseball cap.
2.4 Kilometre Middle Distance Race
8:00am start - 2 laps of the course. A great option for swimmers looking for a longer open water challenge without taking on the full Flannagan Cup distance.
Open to swimmers 15 years and over. Trophies awarded to the fastest male and female. Entry cost $70
1.2 Kilometre Events
8:00am- 1 lap of the course. Open to all ages 10 years and over and trophies awarded to first male and female in the for the following events:
Duncan Laing Memorial Race, 10-14 years old. Entry cost $50.
Open Race, 15-19 years old. Entry cost $55.
Masters Race, 20 years and over. Entry cost $60.
ENTRIES RECEIVED AFTER SUNDAY 31st JAN (ALL CATEGORIES) WILL BE SUBJECT TO A $20 LATE ENTRY FEE.
