Little preview of what's coming to Oxford in November.FLAMENCO MEETS JAZZ
An evening of song, guitar and saxophone, in aid of EDSA, an Oxford charity supporting education in the townships of South Africa. With singer Soraya la Morisca, Marcos on flamenco guitar. and Frank Williams on saxophone.
Together, they will revisit Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain, seeking out the roots of the flamenco cantes/songs he used for this recording, and re-interpret his vision. A unique experience of cante jondo and jazzfusion.
Soraya la Morisca flies over from the heartland of flamenco, Andalucia. She comes from La Puebla de Cazalla and is the niece of acclaimed flamenco singer José Menese. Marcos and Soraya recently performed in Soraya's adopted pueblo El Gastor.
Marcos is the founder of Flamenko Oxford, organising many series of flamenco festivals in Coventry and Oxford, bringing the true voice of flamenco to England. He is steeped in flamenco, starting more than 60 years ago with his maestro Pepe Martinez. Marcos performed, recorded and created numerous radio programmes on flamenco.
Frank Williams hails from South Africa, a resident of Oxford for many years, and is well known as a saxophonist. He will be joined by David Marshall on piano.
