Five weeks of Abbas Kiarostami: And Life Goes On / Life and Nothing More (1992, Iran)🗓 Thursday, October 8 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Week two takes us back to Koker, this time in the aftermath of the real 1990 earthquake that killed some fifty thousand people in the region. A filmmaker and his young son drive into the devastated area, hoping to find out whether the two boys who starred in Where Is the Friend's House? survived - and along the way, Kiarostami blurs fiction and documentary so thoroughly it becomes hard to tell where the restaging ends and reality begins.
It's a film about resilience without a trace of sentimentality: people getting married days after burying relatives, a man rigging a TV aerial in a tent camp to catch the World Cup. Life, stubbornly, continuing.
"In many ways the most beautiful and powerful Iranian film I've seen."
- Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
"A quietly majestic ode to the best of the human spirit."
- The Criterion Collection
