Calling all Art Therapists and Professional Counselors in the DMV! Explore cultural humility in this expressive arts workshop. (7 CEs)
About this Event

Workshop Description:

This workshop will provide participants with an overview of cultural humility and the relevant theories and practices that will enable them to become more culturally responsive clinicians when working across lines of racial, social, and cultural difference (i.e., age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, disability, etc.).

Following the didactic presentation, participants will be encouraged to examine their blind spots and identify a cultural humility goal they would like to explore further through the creation of “Figures of Speech.” Afterwards, participants will learn how this directive can resolve client ambivalence by facilitating dialogue between conflicting parts of self while moving clients through the Stages of Change.

While this experiential workshop will primarily focus on empowering participants to work on their own cultural humility goals, its applicability for clinical practice with clients who struggle with self-care, substance use/misuse, and other concerns will also be addressed. All materials are included.

The training schedule runs from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, with an hour-long break from noon until 1 pm for lunch. There will be a 15-minute break scheduled in both the morning and afternoon sessions to ensure you have plenty of time to step away, refuel, and recharge.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how adopting a more culturally humble stance in their clinical practice can help mitigate ethical dilemmas when working across lines of racial, social, and cultural difference.
  • Identify and explore one cultural humility goal through the artmaking process.
  • Name one theoretical approach that may help address ambivalence among clients who struggle with finding and building motivation for change.
  • Name and properly execute one art therapy directive that can benefit clients who are interested in resolving their ambivalence towards change.
