An emperor wrote the music. His brother wrote the words. Then the score disappeared for centuries. On October 25, Harmonia Stellarum brings Drama musicum—the earliest surviving operatic score from the Habsburg imperial court—back to life in its original version for the first time since the seventeenth century.
At its center is a young man caught between two paths. Cupid promises immediate pleasure. An angel calls him toward divine love. Then Judgment enters and forces him to see where each choice will lead.
The program begins with the daring music of Giovanni Valentini, Ferdinand III’s mentor and imperial Hofkapellmeister, whose experiments helped shape the extraordinary musical world from which Drama musicum emerged.
At the heart of the piece lies a question that has lost none of its force: What is truly worthy of our love?
