Zoals ieder jaar wijden we een speciale avond aan de verjaardag van 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗞𝘂𝘁𝗶 (1938-1977), die tijdens zijn carrière zes keer een onvergetelijk optreden in Paradiso heeft gespeeld. Dit jaar begint de avond ter ere van de ‘Godfather van Afrobeat’ met een lezing door de gerenommeerde socioloog, professor 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝘄𝘂𝗺𝗶, die het thema ‘The Invention of Woman: Making African Sense of Western Gender Discourses’ zal verkennen. DJ 𝗚𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 zal vervolgens de sfeer bepalen voordat de hoofdact, de populaire Nigeriaanse afrobeats- en hiphopartiest 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘇 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝘆, het podium betreedt. De avond wordt afgesloten met een afterparty met DJ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝘄𝗻.

Fela Kuti wordt algemeen beschouwd als een pionier dankzij zijn unieke combinatie van West-Afrikaanse muziek met Amerikaanse funk en jazz. Zijn opzwepende optredens, vaak met een band die nauwelijks op het podium paste, creëerden een onvergetelijke energie. Naast zijn legendarische status als de 'Godfather van Afrobeat', eren Paradiso en Africadelic Fela Kuti voor zijn krachtige politieke activisme, dat nog steeds weerklank vindt in de hedendaagse wereld. Daarnaast brengt het evenement ook een eerbetoon aan Thomas Sankara, de revolutionaire leider van Burkina Faso, die net als Fela streed tegen corruptie, imperialisme en onderdrukking. Sankara’s visie op Afrikaanse zelfbeschikking en zijn inzet voor sociale rechtvaardigheid sluiten naadloos aan bij de geest van Fela's activisme. Zijn nalatenschap blijft inspireren en drijft bewegingen voor bevrijding over het hele continent en daarbuiten.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝘄𝘂𝗺𝗶
Professor Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí is hoogleraar sociologie, gespecialiseerd in gender, kennis en cultuur aan de Stony Brook University. Deze Nigeriaanse geleerde doet onderzoek naar (post)koloniale studies, moderniteiten en Afrikaanse studies. Haar baanbrekende werk The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses (1997) heeft een diepgaande impact gehad op vakgebieden zoals sociologie, (culturele) antropologie, dekoloniale theorie en Afrikaanse, culturele en genderstudies. Haar geschriften worden veelvuldig bestudeerd in de geesteswetenschappen en sociale wetenschappen, ook in Nederland. In 2021 ontving ze de prestigieuze Africanist Award van de African Studies Association, en recentelijk co-redigeerde ze Naming Africans: On the Epistemic Value of Names (2023), een bundel die verkent hoe persoonlijke namen rijke bronnen van historische en culturele kennis kunnen zijn, met gelaagde inzichten.

Falz the Bahd Guy, geboren als Folarin Falana, is een van de meest spannende en invloedrijke Nigeriaanse artiesten van zijn generatie. Hij staat bekend om zijn mix van humor en sterke boodschappen voor de samenleving. Zijn doorbraak begon met het album Stories That Touch (2015), waarmee hij zijn plek in de Nigeriaanse muziekscene veroverde. Hij kreeg internationale bekendheid met de hit ‘This is Nigeria’, waarin hij moedig politieke en sociale problemen in het land aankaartte. Africadelic is een platform en festival dat opereert vanuit Paradiso Amsterdam, gewijd aan het programmeren en promoten van Afrikaanse en Afrikaanse diaspora culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme in Nederland. Het jaarlijkse Africadelic Festival, dat plaatsvindt rond Africa Day (25 mei), is een eerbetoon aan het Afrikaanse continent en zijn wereldwijde diaspora, en toont de culturele rijkdom en sociale impact die Afrodescendants hebben op de mondiale cultuur en samenleving. Naast het festival (co-)organiseert Africadelic het hele jaar door diverse andere evenementen, waaronder de inmiddels jaarlijkse Fela Day in oktober.

Like every year, we are dedicating a special evening to celebrate 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗞𝘂𝘁𝗶's birthday (1938-1977), who performed six unforgettable concerts at Paradiso during his career. This year’s event in honor of the Godfather of Afrobeat kicks off with a talk by renowed sociologist, Professor 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝘆𝗲𝘄𝘂𝗺𝗶, who will explore the theme ‘The Invention of Woman: Making African Sense of Western Gender Discourses.’ DJ 𝗚𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 will then set the tone before the main performance by popular Nigerian Afrobeats and hip-hop artist 𝗮𝗹𝘇 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝘆. The night will conclude with an afterparty featuring DJ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝘄𝗻.

Professor Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí is a Professor of Sociology specializing in Gender, Knowledge, and Culture at Stony Brook University. A scholar of Nigerian origin, her research spans (post)colonial studies, modernities, and African studies. Her seminal work, The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses (1997), has had a profound impact on fields such as sociology, (cultural) anthropology, decolonial theory, and African, cultural, and gender studies. Her writings are widely studied in humanities and social sciences courses, including in the Netherlands. In 2021, she was honored with the prestigious Africanist Award by the African Studies Association, and recently, she co-edited Naming Africans: On the Epistemic Value of Names (2023), a volume that explores the idea that personal names serve as rich sources of historical and cultural insight, revealing layers of hidden knowledge.

The annual Africadelic Festival, held around Africa Day (May 25), is a tribute to the African continent and its global diaspora, showcasing the cultural richness and social impact Afrodescendants have on global culture and society. In addition to the festival, Africadelic (co-)organizes, programs, and presents various other events throughout the year, including the by now annual Fela Day in October.
