About this Event

Synopsis:
Recent Hong Kong cinema has increasingly turned to figures of precarious life—refugees, migrants, low-income workers, sexual minorities, and others whose identities remain marginalised in the city. This talk uses the idea of the cinema of precarity, together with emotion as a critical lens, to read recent Hong Kong films, including The Sunny Side of the Street (白日青春), The Narrow Road (窄路微塵), or We’re Nothing at All (我們不是什麼).
By attending to emotions such as fear, exhaustion, grief, shame, care, and hope, these films show how various precarious and vulnerable bodies have become a metaphor for Hong Kong identity in recent years: a vulnerable identity that is no longer stable and secure. They ask not only who belongs to the city, but what it feels like to be a Hong Konger today.

Please register by 12 December to assist with refreshment planning.
