About this Event

On November 10th and 11th, the Galt Museum will host a play in honour of Remembrance Day. Titled Far From Home, this play tells the story of two women from the UK who come to Southern Alberta as war brides.

The Canadian war brides were women from overseas who met and married Canadian soldiers sent abroad for the World Wars. When they moved to Canada, they stepped into a wholly unfamiliar country and life that was very far from their homes indeed. Like so many women’s experiences of wartime, their stories are often lost and forgotten. But their courage and determination deserves to be celebrated, as does their legacy in their new homes, which continues to this day.

Far From Home is written by Dawn McCaugherty, who was mentored by Joan Waterfield, one of Lethbridge’s most influential war brides. Last spring, the play won Best New Work at both the regional and provincial levels at the Alberta Drama Festival Association’s One-Act Festival. This production is put on by the Folding Time Collective, a local group of artists.

Showtimes are November 10th at 7pm, and November 11th at 2pm and 7pm. Run time is one hour. Tickets by donation. Buy them at the door or on Eventbrite: warbrides.eventbrite.ca
