About this Event
Join DOC UA House for a special screening of Family Album, directed by Maryna Tkachuk, followed by an exclusive in-person Q&A with British photographer Samara Pearce, whose extraordinary family history inspired the documentary.
This is a unique opportunity to meet Samara in person, hear her story firsthand and discover how photography can preserve historical truth across generations.
About the Film
In the 1930s, Samara's great-grandfather, Austrian engineer Alexander Wienerberger, secretly photographed the devastating Holodomor famine in Soviet Ukraine. His photographs became rare and powerful visual evidence of a tragedy the Soviet authorities sought to conceal.
Nearly 90 years later, his great-granddaughter Samara Pearce travels from London to the Kharkiv region, following in his footsteps and documenting Ukraine during Russia's ongoing war.
Through two generations of photographers, Family Album explores the power of images to bear witness, preserve memory and reveal truths that must never be forgotten.
The film is presented in Ukrainian with English subtitles, making it accessible to both Ukrainian-speaking and English-speaking audiences.
Meet Samara Pearce — Live Q&A After the Screening
Samara Pearce will join us in person for a special audience discussion.
Audience members will have the opportunity to ask Samara questions and engage with her personally.
