🌿 Upcoming Event: Exploring Intimacy After Religion
Reclaiming Pleasure: A Science-based Journed Beyond Purity Culture

Date: November 1st
Time: 2:15–6:00 PM
Location:Tango Berretin (SE Portland)

Why do so many people continue to feel guilt, shame, or anxiety about intimacy long after leaving the religious beliefs that taught them those feelings?

How do early beliefs about sexuality shape our nervous system, our relationships, and our capacity for pleasure long into adulthood?

Many people leave behind the religious beliefs they were raised with, yet continue to carry the emotional and physiological imprint of purity culture, sexual shame, and fear-based messaging. Research in psychology, attachment theory, neuroscience, and somatic therapy suggests that these early experiences can influence body awareness, desire, boundaries, self-worth, and relational intimacy well beyond childhood.

In this month’s Sensual Science Salon, we’ll explore the journey from shame to connection, rediscovering intimacy after religion by examining how our brains, bodies, and relationships adapt to the messages we’ve received about sexuality and desire.

Together we’ll explore the science of shame, attachment, nervous system regulation, embodied consent, and the psychology of pleasure through a combination of discussion and experiential practice. Participants will engage in guided breathing, visualization, positive affirmations, gentle somatic awareness exercises, and an introduction to the Wheel of Consent, offering opportunities to notice what desires are present, practice authentic choice, and cultivate greater connection with themselves and others.

This workshop is educational, experiential, and consent centered. Every activity is invitational, with multiple levels of participation available. No nudity or sexual activity is involved.

Whether you’re recovering from purity culture, healing from religious sexual shame, or simply curious about the science of intimacy and embodiment, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how belief systems shape our relationships and practical tools for creating greater authenticity, agency, and connection.

As always, Practice in Intimacy is an experiential laboratory—an opportunity to learn a little, experiment a little, and perhaps discover something about yourself you weren’t expecting.
