Linocut, but as you know it!
If you are curious about where Linoprint could take your practice, join us for a weekend of excitement and discovery!
Artist Sarah Godfrey will guide you in taking a piece of traditional lino and using it in new and expressive ways, experimenting with different methods to cut and print with lino. You will start by creating gentle marks into the surface of the lino, scratching rather than cutting to produce more sensitive, gestural marks, noticing and exploring the natural texture of the Linos surface, and using monotype techniques to print. You will continue to work into the surface of the lino, repeatedly printing and cutting right down to the hessian backing of the lino, even incorporating its beautiful textures.
At every stage you will use both relief - a roller to ink the surface - and intaglio
- pushing ink into the surface and using an etching press - methods, sometimes combining both. You will also try the jigsaw technique, printing multiple colours all at once, embossing, and using both wet and dry papers, to see how far we can push the process and the materials.
The series of prints you will produce will then act as a reference for you to look back at and gain a deeper understanding of the possibilities beyond traditional linocut methods.
At every stage, the group will take time to discuss, learn and notice.
What will I need to bring?
All materials and equipment will be provided.
You may want to bring some ideas for compositions incorporating strong tones but this is not compulsory. Please respect copyright when selecting source images.
Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. No sandals, heels or open toed shoes. Aprons will be provided.
You may want to bring a packed lunch. Teas, coffee, water and biscuits are provided.
About Carousel Print Studio
Carousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Exchange Place Studios in Castlegate, Sheffield. Carousel provides educational workshops in printmaking and opportunities for creatives in Sheffield, in a bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio.
Carousel is located on the ground floor just to the left of reception. The doors are widened for ease of access and there is an accessible toilet. If you have any questions regarding access needs please do contact us at [email protected]
About the tutor
Sarah brings a spontaneous and intuitive approach to making her artwork, enjoying using as many different methods of mark making within one image as she can.
Sarah's training as an Illustrator influenced her imaginative and fantastical style of image making. She is passionate about printmaking, having worked at many workshops, colleges, schools and organisations. She is an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor with people of all ages and abilities.
