About this Event

About the workshop

Join artists Andrew Gale and Kim Bevan for a hands-on introduction to artists’ books and letterpress, using our Adana platen press.

The workshop will introduce you to typesetting and printing using our Adana press, and taking this printed work to hand-make a pamphlet stitch or concertina book.

The activity will be introduced through a brief background in letterpress printing and artists’ books in the context of fine art practice.

You will leave with your own unique artists book, produced using letterpress and printing stamps.

What do I need to bring?

To get started it is useful to have some words and concepts.

It is suggested that participants write two or three sentences, perhaps in response to a question such as 'what does landscape mean to me?' Or a stream of consciousness, lines from a poem, found words; i.e. things you’ve overheard in a shop, the street, the pub, etc. You will use these words as the basis for typesetting and printing in the workshop.

About the tutors

Andrew Gale’s fine art practice includes drawing, painting and printmaking, inspired by the natural and built environment. His recent series 'Songs from the Landscape' explored traces in the landscape, particularly the Kinder Scout and its environs. He has exhibited work in the UK for a number of years and recently, since 2021, in Chicago. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University and recently completed a Master of Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.

Kim Bevan is experienced book artist. She provides workshops for all ages in her own studio and here at Carousel. Kim is passionate about teaching and making art, working with traditional techniques and materials. In her practice she works predominantly with paper to make paper sculptures and artist books. Her artist books play around with 3D sculptural folding techniques and utilise artwork using printmaking, paper cutting and illustration. She is fascinated by human nature, conversations and the everyday, she likes to make work that drawers the viewer in to find the small details in life within the pieces she creates.
